MI vs CSK: The Indian Premier League’s biggest teams – Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians – will meet yet again in the final in Hyderabad on Sunday. Both the teams have won three titles each, while the Mumbai Indians have had the wood over the Chennai Super Kings in the IPL.

They have beaten the Yellow Army 16 times out of the 27 matches they have played against each other. The Rohit-led team has won two out of three finals against CSK so far.

The Mumbai Indians have beaten the Chennai Super Kings in all of their three meetings this season. MS Dhoni and co will hope to better their record in the most important match of the tournament.

However, it would be very interesting to see if the Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings play a combined XI against another team. The likes of MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma would play in the same team.

Harbhajan Singh and Rahul Chahar have played a vital role for their respective teams in this IPL, but they just missed the cut for the possible combined XI of Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings.

Faf du Plessis

Faf du Plessis has been in tremendous form in this season. He played a brilliant knock of 50 runs against Delhi Capitals to help his team reach their eight final in 10 seasons.

Quinton de Kock

Quinton de Kock hasn’t notched many big scores in this tournament, but he has consistently provided good starts for the Mumbai Indians. The South African has scored 500 runs in 15 matches.

Rohit Sharma

The Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma hasn’t been in the best of form in this IPL, but his record in limited-overs matches will open up a place for him in any side in the world. The Mumbai batsman has scored 300 runs in 14 matches.

Suresh Raina

uresh Raina has been a bank for Chennai Super Kings in all the IPL seasons. The Chennai batsman is on his way to record another 400-plus run season. Raina has scored 375 runs in 16 matches.

MS Dhoni (captain and wicket-keeper)

MS Dhoni is certainly going to be the captain of the combined side of Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni has starred with the bat by scoring 414 runs in 11 matches and led the Chennai Super Kings to yet another IPL final.

Hardik Pandya

Hardik Pandya has been in excellent form in both departments – batting and bowling. He has provided the final flourish time and time again for Mumbai Indians with the bat and picked up crucial wickets in the tournament. Pandya has scored 386 runs and taken 14 wickets in 14 matches.

Ravindra Jadeja

Ravindra Jadeja is a live wire on the field and can contribute with both, bat and ball. Jadeja has been an integral part of the CSK set-up this season with 15 wickets in 15 matches.

Imran Tahir

Imran Tahir has been MS Dhoni’s trump card this season. The skipper has called on Tahir to bowl whenever he needed a wicket and the leg-spinner delivered. Tahir has taken 24 wickets in 16 matches.

Deepak Chahar

Deepak Chahar has provided the early breakthroughs for the Chennai Super Kings. The fast bowler has ensured that no team runs away with the match in the powerplay overs against CSK. Chahar has taken 19 wickets in 16 matches.

Jasprit Bumrah

Jasprit Bumrah will walk into any side in the world as he is excellent with the new ball and in the death overs. The fast bowler has kept all the batsmen on their toes for the last one and a half years in all formats. Bumrah has taken 17 wickets in 15 matches this season.

Lasith Malinga

Lasith Malinga has been a revelation for the Mumbai Indians after being a bowling mentor for the same team in the last season. The Sri Lankan and Bumrah have formed a potent attack in the death overs. Malinga has taken 15 wickets in 11 matches.

IPL 12: Chennai Super Kings wary of Delhi Capital’s potential

Delhi and Chennai won easily on contrasting pitches though both teams did the front running for the better part of their campaign-openers.

These are still early days in the Indian Premier League (IPL). But unlike in the preceding editions, these initial matches carry more significance since not all the teams are going be at full strength towards the business end of the league.

With most overseas players on duty in the upcoming World Cup expected to join their national squads, teams are looking to accumulate as many points early in the competition.

Defending champion Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals think no differently. Having won their opening encounters, they face-off at the Ferozeshah Kotla ground to add to their points tally.

Chennai remains the pre-match favourite but Mahendra Singh Dhoni would not like to even think about it. He knows too well that this Delhi team has two brilliant cricketing brains in the dressing-room — Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly. Under Shreyas Iyer, Delhi has players who can execute the ideas of Ponting and Ganguly.

Delhi and Chennai won easily on contrasting pitches though both teams did the front running for the better part of their campaign-openers. Given the Kotla pitch, Chennai is sure to face a different script to the one they were part of, at home, against Bangalore.

Obviously, Delhi has reasons to be more inspired against the champion side. It is a team hungry for redemption.

Chennai, in contrast, always carries the burden of expectations from its fans, across boundaries. For a well-settled unit, sometimes, motivation could be a factor.

Given the potential of Delhi’s attack this season, no team would like it to put too many runs on the board. Further, the pace trio of Ishant Sharma, Trent Boult and Kagiso Rabada are competing with each other to make an impression. The likes of Ambati Rayudu, Suresh Raina and Shane Watson could well have testing times.

In batting, home-grown batsmen are Delhi’s strength and it remains to be seen how Chennai deals with a steady Shikhar Dhawan, stroke-maker Prithvi Shaw, a mature Shreyas Iyer and an unpredictable Rishabh Pant.

Over all, expect a close combat.

Chennai Super Kings: MS Dhoni (captain & WK), Suresh Raina, Ambati Rayudu, Shane Watson, Faf du Plessis, Murali Vijay, Kedar Jadhav, Sam Billings, Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Shorey, Chaitanya Bishnoi, Rituraj Gaikwad, Dwayne Bravo, Karn Sharma, Imran Tahir, Harbhajan Singh, Mitchell Santner, Shardul Thakur, Mohit Sharma, K M Asif, David Willey, Deepak Chahar, N Jagadeesan (wk).

Delhi Capitals: Colin Ingram, Manjot Karla, Prithvi Shaw, Sherfane Rutherford, Shikhar Dhawan, Shreyas Iyer, Amit Mishra, Avesh Khan, Bandaru Ayyappa, Harshal Patel, Ishant Sharma, Kasigo Rabada, Nathu Singh, Sandeep Lamichhane, Trent Boult, Axar Patel, Chris Morris, Colin Munro, Hanuma Vihari, Jalaj Saxena, Keemo Paul, Rahul Tewatia, Ankush Bains and Rishabh Pant.
Match starts at 8 pm.
